American Studies Seminar for High School English Teachers
Kadoorie Agricultural Youth Village, Lower Galilee, July 19 – 24, 2009

Every year the Office of Public Affairs of the United States Embassy in Israel organizes a seminar for approximately 30 Israeli English high school teachers and English lecturers and trainers from all around the country.  The seminar, entitled CLASS (Civics, Language and American Studies Seminar), is recognized by the Israel Ministry of Education and the participants receive up to 56 enrichment points for full attendance.

Please note: Teachers who have participated in CLASS seminars in the past, may not apply.

CLASS is subsidized largely by the U.S. Department of State, which brings U.S. lecturers to Israel specifically for the seminar. This year, award-winning U.S. author, Joan Leegant who teaches writing at Harvard University will speak on contemporary American literature; Professor Robert David “KC” Johnson, professor of history at Brooklyn College and the City University of New York Graduate Center, will give an overview of American history focusing on the civil rights movement and the election of president Barack Obama; and Rick Rosenberg, Regional English Language Officer, will demonstrate cutting edge ESL technologies and methodologies and how they may be used to incorporate the seminar texts into teaching modules for the English language classroom.

CLASS is an immersion seminar, which means that all the participants stay on the Kadoorie campus for 6 consecutive days from July 19 through 24, 2009 inclusive. Full board and lodging is provided; participants will share rooms and must bring their own sheets and towels. Participant cost is 600 shekels.  If you are interested in applying, please fill out the online application attached below.  Application forms will also be posted on the Ministry of Education (www.education.gov.il/english) and ETNI (www.etni.org) websites.

Registration closes on Friday June 19, 2009.
