American Studies Seminar for High School English Teachers
Beit Yatziv National Teachers’ Center, Beer Sheva, July 20 – 25, 2008

Every year the Office of Public Affairs of the United States Embassy in Israel organizes a seminar for approximately 25 Israeli English high school teachers from all around the country.  The seminar, entitled CLASS (Civics, Language and American Studies Seminar), is recognized by the Israel Ministry of Education and the participants receive 56 enrichment points for full attendance.

Please note: Teachers who have participated in CLASS seminars in the past, may not apply.

CLASS is subsidized largely by the U.S. Department of State, which brings U.S. lecturers to Israel specifically for the seminar. This year, award-winning U.S. author, Joan Leegant who teaches writing at Harvard University will speak on contemporary American literature; Professor Robert David “KC” Johnson,  professor of history at Brooklyn College and the City University of New York Graduate Center, will speak on American Studies with special emphasis on the U.S. elections; and Rick Rosenberg, Regional English Language Officer, will show the participants cutting edge technologies and methodologies on how to incorporate the seminar texts into teaching modules for the English language classroom. In addition, Beit Yatziv will provide Israeli scholars to lecture in the fields of civics, local government, and democracy.

CLASS is an immersion seminar, which means that all the participants stay at the Beit Yatziv in-service training center in Beer Sheva for 6 consecutive days from July 20 through 25, 2008 inclusive. Full board and lodging is provided; participants will share rooms. Participant cost is 570 shekels.  If you are interested in applying, please fill out the online application attached below.  Application forms will also be posted the ETNI (www.etni.org) and ANGLIT (www.anglit.net) websites. Registration closes on Friday June 6, 2008.
