American Studies Seminar for High School English Teachers
Beit Yetsiv, Beer Sheva, July 22 – 27, 2007
Every year the Office of Public Affairs of the United States Embassy in Israel organizes a seminar for approximately 25 Israeli English high school teachers from all around the country. The seminar, entitled CLASS (Civics, Language and American Studies Seminar), is recognized by the Israel Ministry of Education and the participants receive up to 56 enrichment points for full attendance.
CLASS is subsidized largely by the U.S. Department of State, which brings three top level U.S. lecturers to Israel specifically for the seminar. This year, internationally acclaimed U.S. author of 11 books, editor of the literary magazine The Southern Review and Professor of English at Louisiana State University, Bret Lott, will speak on the twentieth century novel; Professor M.L. Liebler, Department of English, American Studies and Labor Studies, Wayne State University, Detroit, will speak on American Studies with an emphasis on the Civil Rights Movement; and Andrea Schindler, State Department English Teaching Officer, will show the participants how to incorporate all the seminar texts into Contents-Based Instruction for the English Language Classroom. In addition, Beit Yetsiv will provide Israeli scholars to lecture in the fields of civics, local government, and democracy.
CLASS is an immersion seminar, which means that all the participants stay at the Beit Yetsiv in-service training center in Beer Sheva for 6 consecutive days from July 22 through 27, 2007 inclusive. Full board and lodging is provided; participants will share rooms. If you are interested in attending, please fill out the online application attached below. Letters about the seminar will also be sent to principals of high schools throughout Israel and will be posted the ETNI (www.etni.org) and ANGLIT (www.anglit.net) websites. Registration closes on Friday, June 8, 2007.
