ESTH Officer attends annual Environmental Education Seminar

ESTH officer Paul Rohrlich gave welcoming remarks at a Ministry of Education seminar on Teaching Environmental Sustainability, which featured NASA’s co-sponsored GLOBE (Global Learning and Observation for the Benefit of the Environment) project. The event, which took place at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, was attended by over 50 teachers, from both Jewish and Arab schools, plus representatives from the Israeli Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). Dr. Rohrlich spoke briefly on the importance of environment and science education especially on the young. MOST has recently adopted the GLOBE project’s climatic and other environmental data collecting methods to produce a pilot project, the ASAM-GLOBE project, to start in Israel’s southern (Negev) region, partnering with both the GLOBE project in Israel, Kaye College in Beersheva , and the Department of Geography at Ben-Gurion University, Beersheva. Local schools will collect the data. Other education programs on environmental sustainability were also discussed.
